Chicago’s RedEye publishes a stunning cover. Yet again.

The cover of today’s RedEye:

0901redeyeracismfront

Among the early-morning admirers of this page was design consultant Alan Jacobson. Alan writes in his daily Best Front Design feature:

The newspaper with the best front design today is Redeye, for a page that takes your breath away.

On a day when many papers went 6-cols. with a history-making photo, Redeye raised an issue of even greater historical significance, and it did it in the most powerful way. There’s only one word for this page: Wow.

Wow indeed. We asked Chris Courtney – who is in the process of stepping down as the only design director in RedEye’s nearly six-year history — about the page. He responds:

Today’s cover was all Mike Rich. We were completely overthinking it as a group and at the last minute he simply strips everything off the cover.

RedEye has a good team in place, so its becoming easier and easier to let go. The last four hires that stuck have all been slam dunks. Mike Rich, Sara Stewart, Rex Chekal and Trent Koland—too much talent to sit in the same shared space.

So who will be the new design director? Chris writes:

At this point? Nobody. Hiring freeze simply hitting at the wrong time. That doesn’t mean they won’t ever fill the Design Director/Editor role, but for right now it will remain an empty chair.

Chris suggests you drop by RedEye’s NewsPageDesigner portfolio to check out their recent work. Find that gallery here.

you can’t talk about this without giving a nod to time’s “is god dead?” cover.
