‘Extra, extra’: Inaugural extra edition fronts
Afternoon Extra editions are beginning to roll in. And man, are they gorgeous.
First in our in-basket: The News-Press of Fort Myers, Fla.:
Design by Mike Braun, with an assist by Javier Torres and Bianca Camano. That’s an Associated Press photo.
Jason Tyler of the Columbia (Mo.) Daily Tribune points out that we asked for Extras, but we neglected to say anything p.m. papers!
Good point, Jason. He writes:
So, no extra edition, but we’ll be hitting the stands around 2 p.m. I thought I’d pass along our front for your collection, as well.
We built the prototype last week, and just did a few tweaks and photo selection before our 1 p.m. deadline.
Design by Jason, art direction by Lora Wegman.
Here’s the Boston Globe extra:
Editorial design director Dan Zedek designed the page himself, we’re told. The photo is by Jason Reed of Reuters.
Here’s the St. Louis Post-Dispatch:
Here’s today’s Washington Post extra:
The Post’s Dennis Brack notes:
Typeset a bit after 1 p.m. Eastern Time. Designed by Ken Smith; photo by Toni Sandys.
The extra from The Virginian-Pilot:
Photo by Jim Young of Reuters. Design by Robert Suhay.
Like all the Chicago Tribune newsstand editions these days, the Trib’s extra edition is a tabloid:
The photo is from the Trib’s own Terrence Antonio James. According to AME Joe Knowles, the designer is:
The very talented and overworked Ryan Smith.
The Wilmington, Del., News Journal:

This one is from The News & Observer of Raleigh, N.C.:
Photo by AP’s Mark Wilson. Design by Jennifer Bowles. The section was off the floor by 12:30 p.m., Jennifer says.
And finally, we have this one from the Journal Sentinel of Milwaukee:
