New social networking site created for Indian visual journalists

Iam Sajeevkumar T.K. — who calls himself tksajeev in his online correspondance — a visual editor of the Malayalam-language daily Kerala Kaumudi in Kerala, India, writes to tell us about a new social networking site he’s created to cater to visual journalists in the region:

My site, Newspaper Designing, is open to all. But I am giving more focus to Indian designers who don’t seem to be interested in sharing their thoughts or going through designs from other parts of the world.

I feel like they are in a shell. I want to break that shell.

I hope we will succeed.

We hope you will, too, tksajeev.

His timing is perfect. In a little over a month, IFRA and the Society for News Design will team up to host a visual journalism seminar in Jakarta, Indonesia on March 12 and 13.

Tksajeev writes:

Top Asian and International experts will explain, through case studies and in-depth sessions, how to improve newspapers and magazines’ visual impact and attractiveness with outstanding usage of photos, graphics and design.

Among the instructors:

Bernd Beuermann, longtime Germany-based photojournalist and international consultant and lecturer.

James De Vries, designer, illustrator, art director and consultant who has redesigned publications such as AsiaWeek Hong Kong, the Jakarta Globe and the Sydney Morning Herald.

Karl Gude, infographics maestro and professor at Michigan State University, who has managed graphics staffs at the New York Daily News, the National Sports Daily, the Associated Press and Newsweek magazine.

Peter Ong, a Sydney-based newspaper consultant who has taught and led design and redesign projects for papers and magazines in more than 10 countries. Peter masterminded the IFRA news design sessions in Manila two years ago.

Felix Soh, design and digital media editor for the Singapore Press Holdings’ English and Malay Newspapers Division, including the Straits Times, and the new Asia Pacific Regional Director for the Society for News Design.

Pailin Wedel, a multimedia journalist and instructor based in Bangkok, Thailand. A former photographer for the Raleigh, N.C. News & Observer, she has worked with clients such as the Global Post, the Bangkok Post, the Washington Post and the Poynter Institute.

In addition, IFRA will also be holding sessions on infographics and digital photography in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on March 9 and 10.
