Marin Devine moves to The National

Marin Devinewho was laid off in January after only four months at the Tulsa World – has been hired by The National in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates.

Yes, that’s the same paper that won a big pile of awards earlier this month in the annual SND design contest.

Laura Koot, The National’s managing editor and art director, writes:

Marin will be doing a bit of everything here. We have designers assigned to each section and then we have a “chameleon” that cover vacations across sections, helps with big assignments, handles special projects and generally does whatever needs to be done. Marin will be filling this role.

Marin herself sounds almost giddy:

At first I think I’ll be doing quite a bit of sports because that is the one section they don’t have filled with a full-time designer. It will be my very first time designing sports, but I’ve been secretly jealous of sports designers for a while now.

I’m not sure of my exact starting date, I just turned in paperwork for my entry visa, but I’m shooting to leave the states the first week of March.

A 2007 graduate of the University of Missouri, Marin spent one summer as a Dow Jones copy editing intern at the Amarillo Globe-News and another on the copy desk of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.

She was a designer and copy editor at The Gainesville (Fla.) Sun for a year before moving to Tulsa in September. She designed advance Sunday A1 packages and features for the World and also worked with a section produced by area high school students.

Marin says she’s very excited about this opportunity at The National.

But I do wish there were more good jobs to be had here — too many extremely talented people have been pushed out of this industry when they are the ones that could help make a difference.

Oh, and you caught all those hints about an open sports designer position, right? Laura says:

I’m hiring!

So if you’re feeling the layoff heat and are up for a solid job at a gorgeous paper in the Middle East, contact Laura Koot of The National. Right away!
