Spokesman-Review begins its redesign process with comics

KHD-TV in Spokane, Wash., reported over the weekend the Spokesman-Review was beginning its transition to a narrower web with a reduction of its Sunday comics section.

Yesterday’s color comics was preprinted an inch and a half narrower than usual, the report said. Pages are now 11 inches wide.

The unbylined story reported:

Other sections of the newspaper will change size on June 1, at which time the newspaper will adopt a number of other practices designed to improve readability of its news and advertising. Among the changes, classified advertising will be printed in six columns, rather than the current 10 columns, providing for use of larger type and a cleaner, more readable look. “It’s going to be one of the most readable classified-advertising sections in the nation,” Higgins said.

Retail display advertising in the paper will be sold in modular units to enable simpler ad-pricing and better use of space for the paper’s news report, he said.
