Yes, NewsPageDesigner is down

And down it will stay until Tim Frank, Paul Wallen and their crew get the new-and-improved version running.

Which might take as much as a couple months, Tim says. So we’ll have to be patient.

If you missed the memo on what’s happening with everyone’s favorite portfolio site, we wrote about it back in November and then covered the fundraising effort to replace it. And then we reminded you once again to back up your portfolio.

The fundraiser resulted in $3,400, Tim says, which will buy a new server.

Meanwhile, you have a number of options. Tim set up a ning site where folks can post their work until the new site is ready. Find that here.

Or, you can park stuff at Flickr or here at VisualEditors. Robb Montgomery produced this video to help you get started:

When NPD comes back up, it most likely will have a new URL. Also, most likely, you’ll have to upload all your work again.

So it’s safe, most likely, to throw away all your portfolio bookmarks. If you’re like me, you have several dozen of them.

We’ll keep you posted.

Sigh. Guess that means I’ll have to look at the annuals for awhile, a la 1999.

I recommend a free account on Coroflot.com … easy to do, easy to organize the way you want and there are tons of talented artists and designers on there.

  3. Ally Says:

Thanks for keeping us up to date on NPD!

    Thanks for posting this, Charles.

Those of us who have been on the developing side of trying to bring NPD to the Society for News Design site have been frustrated for a bit now as we tried to work out a solution. The price for purchasing that url was way way beyond our budget (by some 7K).

So … Now we’re working hard to get a new site up that will serve the news design community. We will have more details after we convene this week. Meantime, all apologies for a disruption in the site. Please know that everyone had been working hard to prevent that. Better update after we know more.

Sorry, I did miss the other posts! I’m a bad reader :)

Hi guys, Since it could still be a little while until a new site is finished, I did put up a temporary site at newspagedesigner.ning.com. I wanted people to still have a place to put their stuff and to keep the community going. Please spread the word. Thanks.

I don’t think you need hundreds of dollars to keep a website. It’s more about rethink the strategy (and participation / commitment of the community) than looking for money. The bright side of the crisis is that it turns you even more creative.
