I really do need to read this thread over again, especially the stuff I wrote.

I was laid off Tuesday at the Sun Sentinel. About 30 percent of our editing/design operation left this week or a couple months ago, most involuntarily.
I was called on my day off. I was told that it had to be done on Tuesday, even though designers were able to find out ahead of time whether they would be laid off.
Even though many pages are being done by the Chicago Trbune staff, it's nowhere near the amount of departed designers/copy editors.
I had a great 4 1/2-year-ride at the Sun Sentinel, especially the early part. I was a copy editor on the news desk, which morphed into a Universal desk. So I was back editing some sports copy, which is what I had done most of my life.
I have a background in design and was drawn to visualeditors.com when I edited and designed sports pages at the Las Vegas Review-Journal. It was because of this site I got the job in South Florida.
I was fortunate to have worked with some real talented designers. Many have departed over the years, voluntarily and involuntarily. And talented ones remain, but the numbers are much diminished.
Go to this site to see who left:

Hi: THis was an excellent read. I was laid off from Southern Living magazine, after 14 years of being a staff photographer, in November 2008. I"m glad I have max'ed out the resources (free classes!) available through the placement service the company offered. I learned new business practices, resume forms, plus those folks are paid to keep you motivated, which helps. I'm looking for freelance work now -- local (Birmingham, AL), regional (FL, GA, TN, MS, gulf coast), and national (house hold names). I haven't allowed myself too much down time, except for the occasional nap during business hours. I liked reading about the 5 steps. They're true. I wish everyone the best of luck. It was comforting to read the successes, or new directions here. 'Makes me think some more about what I can do! Thank you. Meg McKinney
