The Deccan Herald — a 500,000-circulation English-language daily in Bangalore, India, launched a redesign today (Saturday).

An unbylined story in today’s paper reports:
For over six months we have worked with our design consultant Palmer Watson, an international design consultancy which has been responsible for creating the design of the world’s most renewed newspapers, including Le Monde in France, and Spain’s El Pais. On several occasions, Palmer Watson’s projects have been honoured by being named the World’s Best Designed Newspaper by the respected Society of News Design.
The new masthead, designed by Palmer Watson, you must have noticed, exemplifies the can-do and youngish personality of the new DH. The promos - bolder and more colourful - are intended to hit eyeballs and kindle your interest.

The story continues:
One of the main features of the new-look is the introduction of the latest high-quality typefaces, specially designed for use in newspapers. Perhaps, your newspaper is the first one anywhere in the world to feature the Clan typeface as its main display font.
The design also makes use of a text typeface called Expresso, which has been created in Portugal by Mario Feliciano, one of the world’s first new type designers. Expresso has exceptional readability qualities, which should enhance your enjoyment of the newspaper.

Not surprisingly, our friend Iam Sajeevkumar T.K. at the Newspaper Designing ning site was all over the news. This is the second time this week we’ve linked back to Newspaper Designing, which caters to visual journalists in India. Great job, tksajeev. Thanks for the pages!
