First look: Redesign of the Sunday Tribune of South Africa
The Sunday Tribune of the KwaZulu-Natal province of eastern South Africa will launch a redesign Sunday, the paper has announced.
A press release put out today by the paper quoted the Sunday Tribune’s editor, Philani Mgwaba, saying:
Research conducted late last year told us that while the Tribune remains a solid and respected newspaper, it could also do with a new image.
The many features which make the Tribune what it is, and which our readers know and love would all still be there, but now presented in a bolder, more visual way.
Before-and-after looks at the new page one:
The page on the right is a prototype, obviously. That would be an ad in the lower right corner.
The press release continues:
Perhaps the most striking change will be to the masthead. “We’re signalling a new era for the title with a modern, reversed-out typeface. It’s a bold breakaway from the existing red and blue, but we’re especially excited by the new masthead’s visual versatility. Depending on the week’s newsbreaks and promotions, we can run the masthead on its own, or integrate it with other design elements,” says Mgwaba.
A closer look at the new page one:
Other new features to debut Sunday include:
- New columnists.
- Pages dedicated to health, environment and profiles.
- “Enhanced” sports coverage with graphics and statistics.
- “More comprehensive” weather coverage.
- Better navigation.
- Expanded editorial pages.
The Sunday Tribune has published since 1937 and circulates about 113,500 copies. It’s owned by Independent News & Media of Cape Town.
