Birthdays for Tuesday, June 23
Here’s wishing the happiest of VizEds birthdays to three very fine journalists…
Denis Finley is editor of the Virginian-Pilot. A 1975 honors graduate from Temple University in Philadelphia, Denis earned a master’s degree from the University in Missouri in 1987. He joined the Pilot that year as a photographer and then worked as photo editor, features editor and news editor before becoming deputy managing editor for presentation in 1999. He was later promoted to managing editor and then editor in 2005. Denis turns 57 today.
Ken Fuson is, without a doubt, one of the finest writers in the country, earning the Ernie Pyle award for feature writing, the ASNE Distinguished Writing Award and the National Headliner Award. Born and raised in Granger, Iowa, Ken spent several years working as a reporter, features writer and columnist for the Des Moines Register. He spent three years at the Baltimore Sun but returned to the Register in 1999. He took a buyout last year and has concentrated on writing books. His first, a biography of baseball coach and educator Kent Stock, is coming out this month. Ken turns 53 today.
Until she stepped down in April, Andria Krewson was a design team leader for the Charlotte Observer. A 1982 graduate of the University of Georgia — where she was news editor of the student paper, the Red & Black — Andria spent three years as a “layout editor” for the Florida Times Union in Jacksonville before joining the Observer in 1985. Among the jobs she had there, over the yeras: designer, an assistant state editor, an assistant city editor, a bureau editor. A blogging addict, she’s currently working with a group of journalists involved in social media and looking for new opportunities. You can find her work here and here and here.
Denis, Ken and Andria share a birthday with musicians Jason Mraz and June Carter Cash, actors Selma Blair and Frances McDormand, choreographer Bob Fosse, researcher Alfred Kinsey, NFL team owner Art Modell, writer Richard Bach, supreme court justice Clarence Thomas and Johannes Gutenberg, the inventor of the internet printing press.
Plus, today is National Pink Day. Seriously.
Have a wonderful birthday today, guys. Best wishes!
