Nine Pioneer Press layoffs include five copy editors, two designers

David Brauer, a blogger for MinnPost, asks:

How many copy editors are even left?

Earlier in the day, David posted:

The scuttlebutt around the newsroom is that reporters and photographers are most likely to be spared, while copy editors, news editors and page designers will most likely feel the pain. This continues a War on Editing that’s played out similarly in Strib buyouts and pay cuts.

The Pioneer Press of St. Paul, Minn., laid off a total of nine, out of a newsroom of 138. Among the visual journalists let go were:

  • Trish Collopy, copy editor
  • Sara Connolly, copy editor
  • Emily King, copy editor
  • Andrew Pritchard, copy editor
  • Jennifer Westpfahl, copy editor
  • Brandi Thomas, photographer
  • Amanda Willis, designer
  • Dana Albrecht, designer

Amanda won a big SND award this year with this page showing construction of a replacement for the bridge that collapsed in Minneapolis a couple of years ago:

Both Dana and Amanda have been cited a number of times in this blog for their work on the pages of the Pioneer Press.

Note: Brandi Thomas won an SND for her iconic image of the bridge collapse. They will all be missed. As a colleague, I learned so much from these friends. And it was a joy going to work with such talented people. As a friend of my said. “Talent will always find a home.”

  2. Beverly Says:

Not every news report even saw fit to name the copy editors since their names don’t appear in the print product. Thank you for listing them here. And best wishes to them in finding work.

  3. Lisa Mueller Says:

I just heard the news. I am really sorry. Best wishes to all those involved.
