Gannett laying off at least a thousand this week

And, as you know, it’s not the first round for the largest newspaper chain in the U.S.

We’ve received virtually no information at all about who, precisely, is now out of work. Published reports out of Nashville indicate at least four visual journalists were among the six newsroom cuts at the Tennessean:

  • Bill Greer, daytime copy desk chief
  • Ricky Rogers, photographer/photo editor
  • Janet Shouse, copy editor
  • Drew White, news graphics

And in Phoenix, a whopping 20 people were laid off from the newsroom of the Arizona Republic. Among the visual journalists reportedly getting the axe:

  • Marcia Hammond, features copy editor
  • Caryn Jenkins, copy editor
  • Jennifer Johnson, copy editor
  • Christine Keith, photographer/videographer
  • Jeremie Lederman, artist
  • Jerry McElfresh, copy editor
  • Jenny Poon, features designer/artist
  • Mark Waters, graphics artist
  • Heather Wells, features copy editor

Anyone know of more? Please spill.

  1. Jen Minutillo Says:

I’m a design intern at the Courier-Journal in Louisville, KY. They laid off 44 positions (7% of the workforce). I’m not sure exactly how many were from the newsroom alone.

The Indianapolis Star laid off 37 people (17 from the newsroom).
