The Post-Dispatch’s coverage of the All-Star Game
We were a little puzzled at first by the front pages coming out of St. Louis this week. After all, the major league All-Star Game was in town yesterday. We’d expect to see it plastered all over the front.
On the left is Tuesday’s page one. Today’s front is on the right:
The reason we’re not seeing it, of course, is because the Post-Dispatch wrapped a section around its paper every day this week. And, like most papers, the Post-Dispatch doesn’t send its wrap covers (or Spadea wraps, either, for that matter) to the Newseum for its daily collection of the nation’s front pages.
Here is the cover of today’s wrap — basically, what single-copy buyers are seeing in racks and newsstands today (click any of the pages we’re posting today for a larger look):
And that’s more like it! Wonderful stuff. Thanks to Carlos Ayulo for passing it along to us.
Sunday’s wrap cover included both the front and back sides:
You’re looking at St. Louis Cardinal all-stars past and present: Stan Musial and Albert Pujols. The portrait was shot by Chris Lee of the Post-Dispatch. The paper is selling poster reprints of this page for $19.95. Find the story accompanying the photo here.
Inside today’s special section is a inning-by-inning recap of the game:
And inside Tuesday’s special section wrap was this diagram of the popular Home Run Derby held Monday night:
In addition, traffic at the Post-Dispatch web site has been off the scale this week. Editor & Publisher’s Joe Strupp reports the P-D had 2.7 million page views Monday, the paper’s highest total ever. Find that report here.
Highly recommended on the P-D site are a set of photo panoramas shot during the game last night by staffer Huy Mach:

On the cover of the wrap, who drew the letters “R” and “E”? You can piece everything else together from the nameplate. Just curious.

From “All-Star Special” on the cover. Should have mentioned that.

Yea, the “E” looks kinda skinny… but non-the-less, a terrific job by the Post-Dispatch… I like the Homerun Derby page alot and the inning by inning page as well. A lot to like… Would you try to refer back to wrap just to get something in the reg. paper?

Not sure why the pdf version looks funny, but in print the letters looked just fine.

In addition to the panoramic photos, we also had the chance to showcase a bunch of multimedia and interactive features with the All-Star Game. Bob Rose put together a list of the Top 10 All-Star Multimedia projects. http://www.stltoday.com/blogzone/the-editors-desk/the-editors-desk/2009/07/stltodays-top-10-all-star-multimedia-packages/
