Birthdays for Saturday, Oct. 3
Here’s wishing the happiest of VizEds birthdays to two wonderful visual journalists…

A 1986 graduate of Michigan State University, Tim spent eight-and-a-half years as a news artist for The State in Columbia, S.C., before becoming a senior illustrator for the old KRT graphics in Washington, D.C. Tim was promoted to art director in 1995. He earned a master’s degree in visual journalism from Ohio University in 2006. Shortly after, KRT changed its name to MCT. Tim turns 46 today.
Kris Viesselman is director of digital product developement for National Geographic and the president-elect of the Society for News Design. A 1988 graduate of Buena Vista University in Storm Lake, Iowa, Kris was a Presidential Fellow and was on the swim team. She served internships at the Arizona Republic and the Sacramento Bee before signing on as a news artist and then a designer at the Bee. She left in 1993 to become art director for the Valley and Orange County editions of the Los Angeles Times. In 1998, she leaped to the Orange County Register as senior art director and then moved again to the San Jose Mercury News as creative director in 2003. In 2005, Kris joined National Geographic Maps as editorial and design director, responsible for maps for the various divisions of National Geographic and its outside partners. She moved to her current position in 2007. Last week, she was elected president of the Society for News Design in 2010.
Kris and Tim share a birthday with actors Neve Campbell and Seann William Scott, writers Gore Vidal and James Herriot, baseball great Dave Winfield, the Rev. Al Sharpton, Roy Horn of Siegfried and Roy and musicians Gwen Stefani, Tommy Lee, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Ashlee Simpson, Lindsay Buckingham and Earnest Evans — better known as Chubby Checker.
Plus, today is Virus Appreciation Day. Seriously.
