Here’s wishing the happiest of VizEds birthdays to six wonderful folks…
Maria Carrillo is managing editor of the Virginian-Pilot in Norfolk, Va. A 1985 graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Maria spent 13 years as a reporter and editor for the Free Lance-Star in Fredericksburg, Va., before joining the Pilot in 1998. She was named managing editor in 2005.
Anders Gyllenhaal is editor of the Miami Herald. A graduate of George Washington University, Anders worked at the Herald and then spent several years as metro editor at the News & Observer in Raleigh, N.C. He eventually became managing editor and then editor before moving to the Star Tribune of Minneapolis and then back to Miami. To answer the question I’m sure he gets a lot: Yes, he’s related to both Jake and Maggie — he’s their uncle. Anders turns 58 today.
Jay Judge is head of visuals for the Baltimore Sun. A 1993 gradaute of Indiana University, Jay worked as desk editor of the Vincennes Sun-Commercial in Vincennes, Ind., and then became assistant night editor for design at the Times of Northwest Indiana in 1994. In 1997, he moved to the Sun, working as a design editor, assistant news design director, news design director and then AME for design and graphics.
David Kordalski is assistant managing editor for the Plain Dealer in Cleveland, Ohio. A 1977 graduate of the College of Wooster in Ohio, David studied art, biology and psychology. He spent eight years as design and graphics editor of the South Bend Tribune and then two years as art director of the Dayton Daily News. He became AME of the Detroit News in 1995 and moved to the Plain Dealer in 1999. Dave turns 54 today.
Mark Marturello is an illustrator and designer for the Des Moines Register. A native of Des Moines and a graduate of Grand View College in Des Moines, Mark spent the early part of his career working for the U.S. government in Fort Knox, Ky. He’s worked for the Register for many, many years, winning lots of awards. He also free-lances for various magazines and art agencies. Mark turns 50 today.
Joe Zeff is creative director of Spashlight studios, a New York-based art and illustration firm. A 1987 graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, Joe worked as a presentation editor for the metro and business desks of the New York Times before becoming graphics director of Time magazine in 1996. He left in 2000 to open Joe Zeff Design, Inc. His firm was purchased by Splashlight about a year ago.
Maria, Mark, Joe, Anders, David and Jay share a birthday with actors Alecia Silverstone, Rachael Leigh Cook, Susan Sarandon, Joseph “Buster” Keaton and John Charles Carter (better known as Charlton Heston); football great Sam Huff; figure skater Kimmie Meisner and writers Anne Rice, Jackie Collins, Alvin Toffler and Roy Blount, Jr.
On this day, 52 years ago, the Soviet Union launched the world’s first satellite, Sputnik.
