Birthday for Saturday, Nov. 14
Here’s wishing the happiest of VizEds birthdays today to Craig Porter, director of photography for the Detroit Free Press.
A 1975 graduate of Michigan State University, Craig joined the Freep in 1976 and has worked there ever since. He’s currently recovering from surgery. He writes on his Facebook page:
It’s been a scary nine weeks since brain aneurysm surgery on Sept 4 — but thanks to all my amazing friends and family I’m getting better each day.
Craig shares a birthday with musician Yiannis Hrysomallis (better known as Yanni); actors McLean Stevenson, Brian Keith and Veronica Lake; former secretary of state Condoleezza Rice; former Sen. Joseph McCarthy; Prince Charles of Wales; King Hussein of Jordan; painter Claude Monet and writer/humorist P.J. O’Rourke.
On this date, 40 years, ago, Apollo 12 was struck by lightning seconds after launch from Cape Canaveral, Fla. Astronaut Alan Bean flipped a circuit breaker, restoring power in the spacecraft and keeping several tons of rocket fuel from exploding. Apollo 12 then went on to perform NASA’s second manned moon landing several days later.
Plus, today is Operation Room Nurse Day. Seriously.
Have a great birthday today, Craig! Best wishes!
