Birthdays for Friday, Nov. 20
Here’s wishing the happiest of VizEds birthdays today to three wonderful journalists…
For many years, Marshall Matlock has been the director of the Society for News Design’s annual creative competition. A graduate of Central Michigan University, Marshall taught at Syracuse University for 33 years, retiring in 2006. He’s still an emeritus professor there.
Margo Morgan is graphics editor for the Rockford (Ill.) Register Star. A 2002 graduate of the University of Iowa, Margo spent two years as an artist for the Jackson (Tenn.) Sun before joining the Register Star in 2005. She was promoted to graphics editor a year ago. Find her blog here.
Susan White is a Raleigh, N.C.-based writer and editor with the University of North Carolina’s school of social work. A graduate of Campbell University, Susan worked at a number of papers in North Carolina before joining the Virginian-Pilot in 2000. She left in 2008 to move back to North Carolina. She is also a senior writer and editor with Weyo, a media company aimed at nonprofits and populated by many of her former Pilot colleagues.
Margo, Susan and Marshall share a birthday with musicians Josh Turner, David Marchand Paden (Davey Havok of AFI) and Duane Allman; actor and model Bo Derek; TV hosts Dick Smothers, Richard Dawson and Alistair Cooke; late New York Times journalist Richard W. “Johnny” Apple (no relation to yours truly) and the late, great Robert F. Kennedy and vice-president Joe Biden.
Plus, today is Absurdity Day. Seriously.
Best wishes, you guys! Have a great day today!

Charles, thank you for the kind birthday wishes. It’s not easy growing old as you’ll find out some day. Meanwhile, have a happy, fun time on this Earth. My best, Marshall
