Here’s wishing the happiest of VizEds birthdays to Derek Simmons, deputy design director of the Los Angeles Times. Derek turns 37 today.
A 1996 graduate of Kansas State University, Derek spent two years as a designer for the Eagle of Wichita, Kansas, before joining the Minneapolis Star Tribune in 1998, eventually being promoted to assistant design director. He moved to the Times nearly three years ago.
Derek shares a birthday with actors Ashton Kutcher, Christopher Rock, James Spader, Larry “Buster” Crabbe and Emo Philips; country musician Garth Brooks; abolitionist Frederick Douglass and writers Sinclair Lewis, Gay Talese, Laura Ingalls Wilder and Charles Dickens.
Plus, today is Charles Dickens Day. For the obvious reason.
