John McIntyre is a free-lance editor, instructor and consultant based in Baltimore, Md., and the writer of a popular copy-editing blog, You Don’t Say. A 1973 graduate of Michigan State University, John earned a master’s degree in English from Syracuse University in 1979 before joining the Cincinnati Enquirer as a copy editor. He moved to the Baltimore Sun in 1986, supervising more than 30 members of the Sun’s copy desk. After 23 years, the Sun laid John off last spring. John turns 59 today.

Salomé Nourse is a news artist for Beeld, the daily Afrikaans-language paper of Johannesburg, South Africa. A 2004 graduate of the Midrand Institute, Salomé has worked at Beeld nearly two years. She also blogs.

Elizabeth Apple is a student at Kellam High School in Virginia Beach and the daughter of yours truly. She’s interested in creative writing, music, drama and Japanese-style “manga” cartoons. Elizabeth turns 17 today.

Salomé, Elizabeth and John share a birthday with actors Laura Dern, Robert Wagner, James Francis “Jimmy” Durante and Lon Chaney Jr.; sports greats Mark Spitz (swimming), Greg Norman (golf) and Lance Berkman (baseball); singer Roberta Flack; composer Jerry Goldsmith and TV hosts George Stephanopoulos and Glen Beck.

Plus, today is Umbrella Day. Seriously.
