Here’s wishing the happiest of VizEds birthdays to a couple of wonderful visual journalists…
Jay Anthony is a copy editor for the Times of St. Petersburg, Fla. After serving four years in the U.S. Navy, Jay earned a degree in journalism from the University of North Carolina and a master’s degree from the University of Missouri. After working at a number of New England papers — most notably the Journal-Bulletin of Providence, R.I. — Jay returned to UNC in 1988 to create a graphic design program in the j-school there. He eventually created, developed and taught four courses at UNC, retiring in 2003 after 16 years.
Charles Gooch is a front-page designer for the Kansas City Star and a blogger and columnist for the Star’s youth-oriented tab, Ink. A 2001 graduate of Penn State University, Charles worked for the Centre Daily Times in State College, Pa., before becoming a copy editor and front page designer for the Times of Beaver County, Pa., in 2002. He moved to the Midwest in 2004. Find his Ink blog here. Charles turns 31 today.
Charles and Jay share a birthday wtih actors Isla Fisher, Maura Tierney, Nathan Lane and Morgan Fairchild; talk show host Joey Bishop; musician Dave Davies of the Kinks; sports greats Vlade Divac (basketball) and Fran Tarkenton (football); writers Horace Greeley and James Michener and painter Norman Rockwell.
Plus, today is Cordova Ice Worm Day. Seriously.

Happy birthday, Charles, er, Chris… I was just thinking of you yesterday as I watched Groundhog Day. You were terrific in that.

Sometimes, I use the mug shot I already have on file. And sometimes — if my file mug is blurry or ancient, or if I have the time — I’ll grope around for a new mug.
My photo of Gooch was three or four years old, so I pulled a new one off of Facebook… not realizing at all that it was actually a photo of Chris Elliott.
What a dumbass thing for me to do. But I made the correction as soon as I realized it. (i.e. as soon as I saw Jon’s comment.)
Sigh…
