Daniel Cooper is grad student at Ball State University, pursing a masters degree in digital storytelling. A 2002 graduate of Ball State, Daniel worked an internship at the Star Ledger of Newark, N.J., before joining the Star-Telegram of Fort Worth, Texas. Dan was promoted to senior designer in 2008 but left last year to return to school. He turns 31 today.

Allie Ghaman is a senior at the University of Michigan and a designer for the Michigan Daily. She has served internships at the San Francisco Chronicle and the Washington Post. She hopes to graduate this year. Find her online portfolio here.

Phil Krugel is late-shift design manager for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. A graduate of Cal State Northridge, Phil spent seven years as a copy editor and designer for the Los Angeles Daily News before moving to Atlanta in 1999 as a sports designer. He departed in 2000 to become assistant sports editor of the Arizona Daily Star in Tucson but returned in 2004. After four years as a designer, he was promoted to his current position in 2008. Phil turns 38 today.

Greg Manifold is a senior news designer for the Washington Post. A 1999 graduate of (deep breath) California Polytechnic State University-San Luis Obispo, Greg worked as a copy editor and sports designer for the San Luis Obispo Tribune before moving to the Post in 2005 as deputy sports editor for design. He was promoted to his current position last year.

Pam Robinson is a copy editor for online and print and acting Long Island editor for Patch.com. A product of Lorain County Community College and Fordham University, Pam worked as a reporter and editor for the Lorain Journal, the Hartford Courant, the New London Day, Newsday, the New York Times, and the L.A. Times/Washington post wire service. She is co-founder and ex-president of the American Copy Editors Society. Find her blog here.

Javier Zarracina is graphics director at the Boston Globe. A 1987 graduate of the Universidad del Pais Vasco in Bilbao, Spain, Javier has been an artist and then graphics director for El Correro in Bilbao, deputy graphics director of the San Jose Mercury News in 2004, and graphics director of Group Vocento in Spain. He joined the Globe in 2007 and also consults for the Innovation Media Group.

Allie, Pam, Daniel, Greg, Phil and Javier share a birthday with actors Eva Longoria, Judd Hirsch, Fabio Lanzoni and Joe E. Ross; musicians William James Adams Jr. (better known as Will.i.am), Mark Hoppus (of Blink-182), Dee Snider (of Twisted Sister), Sylvester Stewart (better known as Sly Stone), Phil Lesh (of the Grateful Dead), Mike Love (of the Beach Boys), and Samuel “Lightnin” Hopkins; TV preacher Jimmy Swaggart and the man on the $20 bill, Andrew Jackson.

In addition, today is Buzzard’s Day and Everything You Think is Wrong Day. Seriously.
