Here’s wishing the happiest of VizEds birthdays to a couple of talented visual journalists…
Shane Blatt is a reporter for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. A 1995 graduate of the University of Florida, Shane worked as a copy editor and A1 designer for the Roanoke (Va.) Times before being hired away by the Tampa Tribune, which eventually promoted him to news design team leader. He joined the AJC in 2005 as a front-page designer. In 2008, Shane left visuals to become a reporter in the paper’s Gwinnett bureau. Shane turns 36 today.
Joyce Garcia is an editor on the central regional desk of the Chicago office of the Associated Press. A 1989 graduate of Cal State-Fullerton, Joyce worked as a copy editor for the Fresno Bee and then the Orange County Register before joining the News & Observer of Raleigh, N.C., in 1992. She spent two years working with the print N&O before moving to the online side in 1995. A year later, she became an online news producer for the Chicago Tribune. She moved to her current position last summer. Joyce also operates a writing, editing and web consultancy on the side, Smart Dog Media.
Joyce and Shane share a birthday with actors Freddie Prinze Jr., James Van Der Beck, Aidan Quinn and Lynn Redgrave; musicians George Michael “Micky” Dolenz and Bob, Clint and Dave Moffatt (of the Moffatts); Mexican tattoo artist Katherine Von Drachenberg (better known as Kat Von D) and Supreme Court justice Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr.
