Birthdays for Thursday, March 4
Here’s wishing the happiest of VizEds birthdays to a pair of fine visual journalists…
Pam Nelson is a copy editor for the News & Observer of Raleigh, N.C., and a blogger about grammar. A 1976 graduate of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, Pam spent 13 years as a copy editor, assistant news editor and assistant editor of the News & Observer’s state Capitol team before leaving to become managing editor of HowStuffWorks.com. She returned to the N&O in 2001 and began her blog in 2005. Find Pam’s blog here.
Geoff Pinnock is senior editor for visuals and production at the Spokesman-Review in Spokane, Wash. A 1981 graduate of Southern Oregon University, Geoff spent 11 years at the Mail Tribune of Medford, Ore., starting out as a sports writer, being promoted to sports editor and finally to chief of the copy desk. He moved to the Anchorage Daily News in 1990 and again in 1992, to the Spokesman-Review as sports design director. He was promoted to design director in 2004 and assumed his current duties a year later. Geoff turns 51 today.
Pam and Geoff share a birthday with actors Patricia Heaton and Catherine O’Hara; gay rights activist Chastity (now Chaz) Bono; sports greats Landon Donovan (soccer) and Knute Rockne (football coach); and musicians Chris Squire (of Yes), Jason Curtis Newsted (of Metallica) and Antonio Vivaldi (of neither Yes nor Metallica).
Plus, today is National Grammar Day and Toy Soldier Day. Seriously.
Best wishes, Geoff and Pam! Have a wonderful birthday today!
