Paul Wallen named design director of the Huntsville (Ala.) Times
Kevin Wendt, editor of the Times, announced earlier this week:
I’m excited to announce that Paul Wallen will join us as Design Director the week of March 29.
Paul has worked for several papers in his career, from smaller ones such as Lewiston, Maine and Kerrville, Texas, to larger ones such as the Florida Sun-Sentinel and San Diego Union-Tribune. Throughout his career, Paul has shown an amazing visual ability – his name is peppered throughout the annual Society for News Design results. But even more than the awards, Paul will bring another level of brainstorming and idea-generation to our newsroom, and his ability to shout a paper’s best work will draw even more attention to our best journalism.
Paul replaces Tim Ball, who departed Huntsville in October.
Paul led an enormously complex redesign of the Ft. Lauderdale paper in August, 2008. The Sun-Sentinel then laid him off last March. A month later, he was picked up by a small Texas paper, where he did brilliant work. However, Paul left the industry about six months later to help run a foster home in Texas.

Congrats to all involved here. Paul is a fantastic talent and I have heard good things about Huntsville BBQ. Sounds like a fit.
