Huntsville (Ala.) Times hires two, plus an intern

No one is hiring newspaper designers these days?

Wrong.

Kevin Wendt, editor of the Huntsville (Ala.) Times, announced today two new hires, plus a summer intern.

Kevin writes:

I’m pleased to announce the following additions to our team:

Sports Editor: John Turner

John is a graduate of Bowling Green State University and comes to us from the Kerrville Daily Times, where he is sports editor.

John is an energetic, hard-working and versatile editor who has distinguished himself in writing, planning and page design. His work was recently honored by the Associated Press Sports Editor contest judges with top honors in feature series and page design. He finished in the Top 10 nationally for column writing and third in Texas.

John will provide a boost to our planning, collaborating and execution while also adding more design and production firepower. He is tentatively scheduled to begin work on May 10, but may make an appearance or two this week.

Designer/Copy Editor: Elizabeth Hoekenga

Elizabeth is currently the Media Desk Manager at the Times Daily in Florence [Ala.], where she oversees a staff of eight who edit and design for the print edition as well as produce multimedia, video and content for the web.

Elizabeth, a 2005 graduate of the University of Alabama, began as a copy editor at the Times Daily and also served as online content producer.

Elizabeth has a strong eye for design and visual storytelling, and we’re very excited about the wide ranging skill set she brings to the desk. Elizabeth is tentatively scheduled to begin work on May 17.

Design/Copy Editing Intern: Kurt Cunningham

Kurt graduates from the University of Iowa on May 15 with a major in journalism and mass communication, along with a double minor in English and History. Kurt has worked for student newspaper, The Daily Iowan, as a staff reporter, columnist and design editor. His planning, editing and design work during a visit to Iowa City by President Barack Obama drew national attention.

He is tentatively scheduled to begin work on May 24, and I plan to hold it against him that he is a Cubs fan.

Army Times just hired me as a full-time designer (/copy editor). But I was replacing someone who moved to the Web desk. :)
