What’s the deal with those skyboxes in Huntsville, Ala.?

Perhaps you spotted it yourself on Wednesday — this amusing little bit atop page one of the Times of Huntsville, Ala.:

Thursday’s was even funnier:

Here is today’s:

So what’s the deal?

There is a traveling exhibit featuring the science of the Star Wars movies opening next week at the Space and Rocket Center — the big NASA center and museum in Huntsville where they engineered the Saturn V, the space shuttle and the International Space Station.

Not only is Huntsville Times design director Paul Wallen a fan of the Star Wars movies, but the editor of the Times — former San Jose Mercury News design chief Kevin Wendt – is an even bigger Star Wars geekazoid. So the Times is going all-out for this thing.

The Times kicked off its advance coverage of the exhibit two weeks ago with this gigantic — and fun — features front designed by Paul:

The Times hopes to run these amusing skybox promos every day leading up to its “week of special coverage” beginning Sunday.

And, as it happens, I know a little bit about that “special coverage.” I’ll show you the first two days of it on Monday, here in the blog.
