Yeah, ok, so it’s in South Carolina, but you get to work with Tom Peyton, who, and I know from experience, is a pretty cool dude. And if you can leave the beaches and nightlife of South Florida for the… uh, what do they have in South Carolina anway? For arugement’s sake, let’s say farmland… for the farmland of Columbia, South Carolina and still be happy and making savvy visual decisions, well, there must be magic corn in them there farmlands. Did I take that too far?
Ok, so, bottom line: The State’s doing cool stuff and is led by a cool guy. Apply now. Tom’s ad appears below.
Creative freedom in South Carolina?
I could write a job description about how The State is looking for a driven designer who wants to push the bounds of news design. That we’re looking for someone who is committed to great typography, bold visuals display and strong photography. That The State is committed to risk-taking and creating a design environment that is only limited by the power of your imagination. And that we’re not tied down by story count or deadly formatted digest.
But I won’t, because who would believe me.
If want to have fun, enjoy life, do great design and benefit from crazy low cost of housing, then apply for our news design position.Tom Peyton

What do they have in South Carolina?
Nicole, Nicole, Nicole… *Sigh*…
In South Carolina, they have:
1) Great football. At Clemson University, that is.
2) Great beaches — Myrtle, Folly, Hilton Head, Hunting Island, Isle of Palms…
3) Great golf
4) Mountains. Not huge ones, like in Colorado. But very nice ones.
5) Fabulous weather.
6) Friendly people. For the most part, that is.
7) Wonderful food: Tasty pulled pork barbeque and barbeque hash in the west, mustard-based barbeque sauce from Maurice Bessinger’s in the central, and all-you-can-eat shrimp and catfish on the coast. And don’t forget the traditional low-country shrimp boil — a gumbo-like feast including sausage and corn-on-the-cob.
Charleston. Which means antibellum homes and mansions, beautiful old churches and trees older than you can imagine. Rainbow row and battery park at sunset. Just gorgeous.
9) History. The battlefield at Cowpens. The battlefield at King’s Mountain. Fort Sumter. Sherman’s march. The old fort at Ninety-Six. The USS Yorktown at Patriot’s Point.
10) And most of all: South Carolina is the birthplace of that great American journalist Charles Apple.
Ya gotta love it.
Some of the coolest people I know are either from or in South Carolina.
Plus, I’m of the opinion that if you don’t end up working in Florida for part of your career, you’re required to swing through S.C. for at least a year. I got it out of the way early.
My football loyalties are admittedly split, however: My coworker Jill Martin is a USC grad, and her desk is closer to mine, so that makes me a Gamecock fan if I’m given the choice. Because I want to keep my work environment kosher and stuf. But if MSU plays USC, I’m totally rooting for … neither, because I’m not really a college football fan.
This sounds like a good gig for whoever wants it.
Guys, thanks for the props…on S.C. and the State.
I didn’t know what to expect when I got here from the S-S.
But it’s been great.
The best part: how easy it is to get interesting design in the paper.
Only major problem: “Got some canes over here!”
Tom: Was that a University of Miami cheer?
Ernie: So when are you coming to Florida, then? And admit it, you just want to wear a ballcap that says “COCKS.”
Charles: We went to Maurice Bessinger’s place in Santee just for the laughs at the gift shop. We called it the “Klan-B-Q.”
Denise: I already made my S.C. swing. So I’m going to try to avoid Florida if I can. I’m really not a sprawl kinda guy, so if I were to go anywhere, it’d have to be a big city in the Midwest. I’d love to end up somewhere like Minneapolis someday.
Florida, not so much. Just not feeling the love for hurricanes.
