Early this year, I proposed to Sports to do a Cal Ripken poster page when he gets inducted into the Baseball HOF since Norfolk just became the Orioles AAA affiliate. In June we decided to have it include Tony Gwynn and include current players likely to get into the HOF. The website www.baseball-reference.com was extremely helpful with the HOF Standard and HOF Monitor scores they provide.

Visual Journalist Mark Boswell with the help of Billy Steve Clayton and myself, Ray Grumney put together this graphic that looks at the major evidence for global climate change. On the heels of the comprehensive report on global warming that came out last Feb., we looked at the data, past and present, and the effects.

Visual Journalists Eddie Thomas, Jane Friedmann and Jim Freitag teamed up to produce this graphic illustrating Northwestern Minnesota's Big Bog animals at one time.

This graphic by Visual Journalist, Mark Boswell shows how The Minnesota Department of Minnesota uses new techniques known machine control to build roads better and faster.

This graphic by Visual Journalist, Mark Boswell illustrates how the Ham Lake fire burned through two main types of forest: jack pine/black spruce in the western area of the burn and red/white pine near Gunflint Lake. Both rely on fire to ensure their survival, but in different ways.

This graphic went with a story about Washington Ave.
Once a tired thoroughfare lined with empty warehouses, Washington Avenue is becoming a draw for a growing number of Minneapolis home buyers.

Using an image Pictometry International we gave readers a look at the 3M plant in Cottage Grove Minnesota. 3M produced perfluorochemicals (PFCs) at their Cottage Grove facility from the late 1940s until 2002. PFC products were produced, handled, used or packaged at several locations at the site. Wastes from the PFC production process were disposed in an on-site pit, and in local dumps. Wastewater treatment plant effluent containing PFCs was discharged to the adjacent Mississippi River for decades, and sludge from the wastewater treatment plant and ponds that contained PFCs was also disposed on site. Fire-fighting foams containing PFCs were also used at a fire-training area on the west side of the property.

The graphic with text and headline.

Two versions of the same graphic. Curious which folks would pick, as the bubble graphs (don't know what to call them) are becoming a popular alternative for busier pie graphs.

To me the pie graph is clean, but the bubble graph gives a more accurate impression of the size of the auto makers and is simpler. With the bubble graph VW really does feel tiny compared to GM, to me pie graphs takes to much visual processing.

Our designers went with the bubbles; you?

(gray box is just cleanse your visual palette)

We did this graphic on the 30th Anniversary of the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald. We looked at how the ship was constructed, the route, a timeline graphic of it's final hours and a look at the current theories about how she sank. We also included a memorial listing of the crew that was lost. Star Tribune visual journalist, Mark Boswell researched, reported and created the graphic. We commissioned 3D artist Sam Perkins for the illustration of the ship being tossed by the gails of november.

They invade from places around the world. They arrive as stowaways on ships, then take up residence. These invasive creatures compete for the same food as indigenous species and are dramatically changing the ecology of the Great Lakes.
This was a multi-day project that looked at the problem of invasive plants and animal species of invading the Great Lakes.
