Just some background. I have an Associate's Degree in Graphic Design from the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. Over the past few years I have been close to deciding on what education to pursue from there, but haven't found the right fit.
Now I think I am in a field that is the right fit. I like designing and producing publications. The combination of design and analytical skills that are required appeals to me. This weekly paper is nice, but I would like to ensure myself some longevity in this field, and also give myself some options in the future.
Since my previous' institutions credits are not largely transferable (thanks to the accreditations), I don't know if retaking classes in a graphic design major is that viable. I feel like I have to get a degree that will complement what I have without haveing to retrace ALL the steps. I like graphic design, but I would like to specialize in publications like newspaper design, which to me, is a whole different beast from your usual marketing stuff.
I have been thinking about a journalism or communications degree to boost my education section on the old resume. It would take me a while to do, but it seems like it would help me along that path and with plenty of options.
What kind of degrees do you guys have? Does this seem like a viable and reasonable option? _________________ Just a one-person art department for a niche paper. |

If you want to continue in newspapers, I would definitely recommend taking some courses in journalism, but I don't know if, at this point, I would do a full degree in journalism, and here's why: The one thing I like about the newspaper biz is that your degree isn't as important as your portfolio and experience. I've known people with all sorts of non-journalism-related degrees who have managed to have a good career designing newspapers. You can have a career in journalism without a journalism degree, but that's not necessarily the case in other fields of graphic design. With the uncertainty facing the industry, it won't hurt to have an educational background that will give you more options. What about studying something like interactive media and doing a concentration/minor in journalism? That way, you're equipped with skills to excel in a newspaper industry that's moving increasingly online, and should you decide to leave the biz later on, your degree will still be applicable to other fields of design. _________________ Let this be a lesson to you: Never Try. |
