And I truly understand the not-wanting-to-change factor, but this is how it is. Technology changes every minute and you've got to stay current. Quark is still Quark, but I believe the future is InDesign. And while I use Photoshop and Illustrator more than other people I work with, the thought of an all-Adobe workflow is pretty sweet.

Hell, we've got folks who still struggle with Quark after all this time. Their brains would fuse shut if we tried to teach 'em something new so soon. |
I don't think it's a good idea to use it, but there is a feature in InDesign that lets you use the same hotkeys as Quark, which might make some people more comfortable. Also, if your staff knows how to use Photoshop and/or Illustrator, InDesign is pretty easy to pick up without any formal training. You could probably figure it out how to do everything you can do in Quark in less than an hour, and the rest is just bonus features. Just a few thoughts from an InDesign nerd...
And Scott is right, people (especially management) don't want to change, but they have to if they want to keep up.

Tell management that they will get better financial numbers by switching to Indesign not to mention that people do more and learn faster on Indesign due to its friendlier interface.

My paper uses Quark 4.1 in Classic mode and just about everything else in OSX thanks to a front-end system that can't be upgraded to an OSX platform.
I joked with our systems folks earlier this year that I was planning on throwing a big birthday party this fall. After all, on Oct. 2, Quark 4 will turn 10 years old! And we're still using it! In its defense, it's fairly stable for a 10-year-old dinosaur.
At home, I'm currently using the trial version of Quark 7.2, available for free download as an evaluation for 30 days. And I really, really like it. Yeah, I know InDesign is what we're all going to. It's just a shame that Quark went the direction it did because Quark 7 is quite nice.

I have QuarkXPress 6.5 at home (yes, I actually bought it). I have no problems with it, and unless you like InDesign better (why does this sound like the Illustrator-FreeHand debate?), well, I have no problems with 6.5.
Obviously, I don't have much to add to this thread (chuckles)....

Quark v6.5 (v6.1 with updates) is very stable, never crashes and has so many more useful features than the quirky 3.32. If InDesign wasn't an option, I'd be perfectly happy sticking with this version. I've also worked in v7, but don't like it as much -- seemed to crash frequently, especially when certain file formats are imported (binary vs ascii).

Quark V6.5.2 paired with Quark Copy Desk is very workable (I still miss my time with NewsEdit Pro). A coming update of Quark apparently enables automatic jumps (should be nice) even if someone else has one of the pages open (sweet, if true!).
I'm working Quark on a G4 with sufficent memory and a flatscreen — works very well for me.
(Dougie, you bought 6.5 Quark?) Dood, if you need some tips and tricks, gimme a hollah.

Yes, I bought 6.5 while I was in Sarasota, and I'm still pretty decent with it when I wield it on a project, even though I've been corrupted by Hermes and CCi!
I actually got a trial edition of InDesign a few years ago, installed it and never used it. When I finally did open it, it was dead. (What's the point then?)

It's not so much that we use Quark 6.5, so much that it actually uses us...
No, seriously though, it's a tremendous upgrade from 4.11+ OS 9. There are still some stability issues we have with odd things like copy/paste crashing Quark, Switching doc windows within Quark will crash it - and a bevy of other, smaller issues.
That said, I'm on a single 1.8 Ghz G5 with 1 GB of Ram, and I feel like I'm back working on a 400 Mhz G3. Maybe I'm spoiled because I have a kick-a** dual-core machine at home (among other goodies), but I'd love a newer computer here at work to run Quark/CS 2/other essentials as fast as things move for me at home...
The slowness of my system drains me, and Q 6.5 and CS 2 have a lot to do with that.
