A friend of mine recently took a job (not in newspapers) in Columbia, South Carolina. Any of you current or former The State-ers have some favorite bars to suggest? I'm afraid my two stints as an intern at The State came before I could go out to the bars. (I know. It's hard to imagine me not at a bar. But there was a time.)

Thanks for any tips!

Your friend missed out on an amusing time in S.C. history -- when they had to, for some completely stupid and convoluted reason, serve all liquor out of minibottles. It was a law on the books for years that only went away in 2006.

During my brief stint there a few years ago, one of my favorites was the Speakeasy, a nice lounge atmosphere with couches, fireplaces, and pianists. And I believe it was open till like 4 a.m.

I can't find the video of Samantha Bee from the Daily Show's special report on it.

Classic stuff.

My favorite thing is having to rush to the red dot and purchase my hard liquor before 7 p.m. It gets really amusing on Saturday night around 6:45 to see all the local drunks rush in for their stash to get them through until Monday! Very Happy

I'm glad the Mini bottles are gone too. Here's our eulogy:

Bars to hang out in:
Delaney's, Jake's, Group Therapy, Jillian's, Uncle Louie's, Liberty Tavern

I can't think of any more (cause I dont' hang out in them anymore), but there are more out there. Ellen, can you think of more?

No kidding, when I go to work, I have to drive by Green's, a liquer store that is right next to the University of South Carolina's campus. There is always a traffic jam on Saturday, especially when the students come back in the fall.

I like all the bars that Elizabeth mentioned. I'm also a fan of Art Bar, Night Caps and Wild Hare.

Most of the bars are located in two ares of town: Five Points and the Vista. Five Points tends to have a large college crowd, especially on Fridays and Saturdays. While, the Vista crowd tends to be more of a young professional crowd. However, both places are fun

Ernie, a co-worker told me once that the reason for the minibottle was that the government could charge tax on every bottle the bar sold.

Plus, he also told that a minibottle drink tends to have more alcohol in it than a free-poor drink.

Yes, it's harder to water down a drink made with minibottles. A downside for fans of complicated drinks: They might have to buy several minibottles to mix their favorite potions, of which only small portions would be used. Of course, if you're a shots-and-beer guy, it don't matter no how.

As one of the resident full-time drinkers at The State ... Jake's is my favorite, especially on a nice warm day, where you can sit outside on the back deck, watch sports and drink beer.
There's also Nightcaps for after hours and Speakeasy, which is a nice little cigar bar.

Group Therapy, Jakes and Speak Easy were my favorites. The Vista was too expensive.

Many a late night/early morning spent in Five Points. Those were the days, eh Bill?
