Just curious about different systems. ... Anyone know if Quark pages or templates be imported into the other pagination systems, such as InDesign, etc.?

InDesign can open files created in Quark 4.0. But Quark put a stop to that with the newer versions.

I'm currently doing a 30-day evaluation trial of Quark 7.2. So far, I really like what you're able to do with it.

But here's what sucks about Quark.

If you're using Quark 7, you can apparently save documents that can be opened in Quark 6.

But if you want to open the same document in Quark 5, you would have to save it back to 6, open it in 6, then save it as Quark 5 to open it.

To open the same in Quark 4, you'd have to save into Quark 6, open it in 6 and save it to be compatible with 5, open it in 5 and save it down to 4.

So for someone like me who is currently using a Quark 7 trial at home, but who also has a copy of Quark 6 at home, if I do work at home that I want to use in the office (where we sadly use Quark 4 still -- it's a long story), I'd have to work in 7.2, save it as a Quark 6 document, take it into Quark 6 and save it as a Quark 5 document, take it into work, get on the ONE MACHINE that has Quark 5, open it and save it as Quark 4, then finally open it in Quark 4. And then pray that nothing got lost in the translation with all those switcheroonies.

Pretty crazy, isn't it?

Something that's irking me about InDesign is its backwards compatibility. You can't "save back" from CS2 to CS or from CS3 to CS2. You have to save off an "Adobe Interchange" (.inx) file first. Then the older version of InDesign can open that and it runs some translation.

Is it so much to ask for one-version-back compatibility these days?

Backwards compatibility in InDesign would be nice, yep, but Adobe made some major coding changes between CS1 and 2, and 2 and 3. So you could end up with a program as bloated as Word. God forbid. Wink

Now, from the "asinine decisions" department: A friend of mine works at a small-circ paper west of here in Missouri. Said paper switched from a PC to an all-Mac newsroom (dual-processor G5s, who-hoo!) earlier this year. They bought CS2 for all the tubes. And Quark 7.

Reason why? "We need Photoshop and Illustrator, but we don't want to train the ad staff on InDesign. And they're already using Quark 4, so they won't need any training to switch to 7."

No wonder my friend has taken to calling his paper the Dumbocrat, sted Democrat.
