Well, we won't be creating one from scratch, but we are looking into combining design, graphics, online and the photo departments into one mega multimedia department. Any thoughts on doing this? Can anyone offer up an example of how their multimedia desk is structured?

A testiment to newsrooms' general preparedness: This thread has been alive for 12 hours and no one has responded.

I don't have any personal experience in this department, but if I were in your position I'd talk to some current and former folks at the Sun-Sentinel. Some names to get started: Jeff Glick, Don Wittekind, Len DeGroot, Scott Horner, Tim Rasmussen.

Another thought about newsrooms: They need more women.

Good advice, I'll have to chat with the Sentinal folks.

So, you say women are good at multimedia. I almost hire an entire female graphics department in 2005, but two of them got better offers.

That's the story of my life.

Also, the Oklahoman recently combined its departments in this fashion. Bill Bootz: Are ya out there?

ZZZZzzzzz ..... what, did someone say something?

Hey, thanks for the wake-up call, Charles. I've been in CCi installation land. I feel like the world is just passing me by somedays...

The Oklahoman did recently create a multimedia department to handle graphic design for print and online, for our niche products and advertorials (I hate that word) and editorial. We also have a TV mini-studio with a green screen to do interviews and any video segments for the Web.

Unfortunely for us, we have the same concerns with our multimedia designers as we did for our editorial graphic designers: no journalists in the group. Whatever you do, commit to having journalists in the design group and a stable typographical philosophy with your newspaper.

I'd give really good money to get even one of these folks in our multimedia department for even a short time. What they do in Ft. Lauderdale is to me the standard for multimedia journalism.

We here at the AJC are rapidly and somewhat radically reworking our newsroom to a online first, print second format. Jobs are being reworked to meet the need to get dynamic content up fast. I am shifting out of my Graphics Editor role to a front line online artist position, developing online graphics. Very soon the entire graphics department will be regularly producing interactives (and statics) for online. Doing this we are still in solid position to produce print graphics, when we were doing it the other way online was getting the sort end of the stick because it was too late in the day to be posting graphics. We now have two Graphic Editors who coordinate content for the department with a strong eye on online posiblities. We also have a Graphics Director, the newly appointed Joanne Sosangelis, who will work on planning and will make sure we move through this change as smoothly as possible. Emily Murphy is our Director of Multimedia, who also works directly with us as well as with Michael McCarter from the Photo department. Its just busy hive here right now. We have as many questions as we do answers, its really a moving target, but I believe we are getting good traction.

Some of our people just got back from video training, so the newsroom is really pumped about the new toys including Avid. Producing daily video segments for the web is a major challenge for us in the coming months. We are combing the graphics, web and photo staffs; This seems to be the way to go for us since we are all learning new video techniques. Any thoughts on bringing the photogs into the multimedia mix?

assign a point person from photo, make it their job to massage what is done noramlly done in photo to the online world. This would include responsiblities of audio and video.
