Does anyone hope Bonds doesn't hit 756 in last two at bats?

Ernie - looks like Gehrig's name is spelled wrong in the RBIs breakout.

(I like the page a lot - just wanted to get that first in the hope you can fix that before it goes to press.)

Crap crap crap. Too late for us. Sad

Yes! I didn't have to touch it! Very Happy Very Happy
For a long time I've dreaded having to put something on 1A about bonds breaking the record.
I was on vacation for two weeks and figured he'd break the record then -- he didn't -- then I come back and work Monday night, worrying that he'd do it then -- he didn't. Then he does it on the first night of a dayshift I'm working the rest of the week. Perfect. The coffee tastes better this morning.

(Before I left yesterday, I did advise the 1A guy to grab a shot of Bonds to use just in case, because our graphics staff is gone by his second at-bat.)

Here's a question: Considering how late Bonds' games are, what were your paper's plans for covering the record-setting HR in print and online, especially if you are on the East Coast? Since the online product is a constant topic of conversation here, can anybody share if their paper had plans for more extensive online coverage than in print (any special Web packages). This would seem to be a perfect situation where it'd make sense to do more with your online coverage than your print coverage, given the deadlines and the fact that by the time your paper gets out the next morning, EVERYBODY would already have known about the news. Or did it mostly become another case of "Tear up the front if you have time (for news that'd be obsolete the next morning), and refer to the story on the web"?

I don't work nights anymore, but I noticed our first (West Volusia) edition went out without any mention of Bonds on the cover at all. I think their deadline is somewhere around 10, 10:30 EST. The final that came to my house had 5 columns of Barry across 1A, with a promise of a full-page graphic and a commemmorative section on Thursday. That's been in the works for a while, I believe.

Nice front, Billy.

I have a hard deadline of 11 edt — the only thing that will allow me to push beyond is Friday night football, which approaches rapidly. We don't do much national sports at my paper, so Bonds hasn't really been much of a priority for me, but I may do something nice for the commemorative aspect of it despite my personal feelings about Bonds and all the allegations.

John,

Honestly, I think the game was late enough that blowing out a huge package on page one is acceptable. This is a moment in history, and not EVERYONE knew. In fact, because I don't watch much baseball, I didn't know until this morning.
I think in the spirit of letting the average joe who doesn't watch baseball know, it's okay to treat this as breaking news. This is one of those things that a lot of people only kind of care about, but care about it enough that when it happens, they want to know.
Just my opinion.

I'm with ya, but national stuff really isn't our focus (we're geared more toward hyperlocal and community stuff), and I don't think newspapers are really in the "breaking news" biz anymore, but that's another argument for another day. There's a thread on which I offer my opinions about that. Something about smash heads or some such.

Of course, it's the New York Post, but I loved how they did the 756 in syringes against a black screen. Out of all the fronts I saw, that's the one that really caught my eye because of the statement it made. Maybe it's just me, but the asterisk and the syringes are highly editorial statements even if they are made visually. We all have our opinions (myself included), but there is no proof that Bonds was/is dirty and for a few papers to more or less indict him in that regard crosses boundaries I'd rather not see crossed. It's no different that convicting an accused murderer in print before they've gone to trial. Innocence until proven guilty and all that, you know.
