There were two sides to this story. Barry becoming the HR king and the people who didn't think it was legit. I thought some papers or tab rags crossed the line. The needles forming 756 didn't even mirror the story as Bonds has never been accused of shooting steroids. The tainted 756 headline was over the top as well IMO.

We were cautious about using the * as we didn't want tarnish the event, but we did want to give the reader a choice. We decided to use the * as it would be used in a contract sending readers over to the small text on the right. Now the reader had a choice on which direction to go.

Wow. In all honesty, I didn't even see the asterisk until I took a third (fourth?) look at the page. If you wanted understated, Billy, you got it as far as I'm concerned. And in the context you gave, I agree the asterisk is appropriate in that you're giving the reader a choice. Otherwise, it's prejudicial — but that's just me talking outta my backside.

I don't see a cutline on that photo, Billy. Was that done on purpose?
I thought that was Barry Bonds at home plate when I saw the page. With no cutline to clarify what was going on in the photo it seems a bit misleading.

Because of our "hyperlocal" coverage, national news on A1 has to be really compelling. Barry, alas, was not. I was hoping Mr. Bonds did his dirty deed some day other than on my watch. No chance. We watched the game and scooted through our first edition with no changes. Then, for our third edition (out of four) Barry hit paydirt and we commenced to redo A1 colors for a promo I had built earlier. Sports, however, went whole hog and redid their cover for our final edition with a small story and photo for the third edition (The HR was hit about 20 minutes prior to drop-dead time for that edition.)
