I'm working right now in a cover for a publication of the San Antonio Express-News with a magazine style, and I want to use an (spot) metallic ink on the logo... so, if you have any kind of tips to work with spot or pantone colors on Photoshop or Indesign please share them with me.

hey adrian. at house of blues, we'd use pantones, uv coating, varnishes and foil. basically, i'd make a separate layer or layer group for your pantone color.

after i'm done with whatever i was working on, i'd flatten and save the cmyk portion. then i'd flatten and save everything with the pantone as another file. i think i saved it as a greyscale. with foil or varnish, i think i had to make whatever i wanted to have it 100% black.

i have an example of it for a cd cover i did. but i need to dig around and find it.

so the printer should be able to print the cmyk and a 5th color: your pantone.

there's also a way to do it with channels. we had a weekly ad in the la weekly that was b/w plus a spot blue. our la venue designer used channels to separate the blues out. just from watching her do it, it looked like a pain in the ass. luckily i never got stuck doing it.

i haven't done this in years, so my info could be a little off.

also, quark outputs cmyk plates and a spot color plate if you specify a spot color. i'm sure indesign can too.

have you asked your printer?

Thanks for your tips Mr. Gee!
The people of our pre-press side is contacting the printer and then probably we can get more details on this.
If we can do it I will be sending you a copy.
Thanks again!

I just found this link which provides a good information on how to handle spot colors from Photoshop: http://www.computerarts.co.uk/__data/assets/pdf_file/660284/art128_tut2.pdf
It was very helpful for me.
