Having lived in Dingle, Ireland from March 2003 to about November 2004, I noticed that newspapers in the Independent group, including The Kerryman, the Irish Independent, and The Corkman will tend to have two-column ads in the bottom corners on Page 1A.

It creates, for me, an awkward three-column news hole that tends to limit photo art below the fold.

For example, if you look at the Cork-based Irish Independent (here at http://www.unison.ie/irish_independent/frontpagepdfs/2005/12521.pdf) you can see that the editor will place indeces at the very bottom and a small story - this time about Easter Rising leader Padraig Pearse's surrender note - above the index.

However, what really irks me is that the two-colo(u)r ads compete visually with the smaller photo of Padraig Pearse's surrender note (if you go by EyeTrac or something like it).

This actually gets worse with the Kerryman. The Kerryman has only six columns on the front, and with two 2-column ads in the corners, this editor would have only two columns of a news hole in the middle, and there usually is no art below the fold.

(The editor of that paper has been known to say he hates his printing press (he also prints the Corkman in Tralee); however, he did change the pallette to crisp up the color a bit about a year ago, and I think the pulp consistency of the newsprint changed then, too.)

What would the best solution for such Independent-owned papers be -

1) have only one ad running the width of 1-A along the bottom OR

2) have two shorter three-column ads bumping and do away with any newshole in between?

(News in the southwest of Ireland tends to be very slow. A leading cause of death locally is car crashes.)

Sincerely,

Chris Skurkey

Unless your paper wants to lose money, management should stipulate the ads are built on one side. Editorial wells annoy both advertisers and readers, no matter what one or two clients might say.

What a terrible ad stack. I would cry the moment I saw that in a US paper.

Agreed. Near criminal.

In my biz (free community papers) we run a very heavy ad stack - somewhere around 54-58 per cent considered about ideal - so I'm used to the stairway to hell.

If someone forced me to put that on the front, however, I'd weep.

I recently thought, "why not change the number of columns from six to seven?" Just a thought.

From Unison.ie's flagship newspaper, The Irish Independent, it is apparent that the seven column grid is the standard.

My bad.

Both The Kerryman and The Corkman tend to follow The Independent's lead in front-page design. The link to a PDF version of The Independent is here:
http://www.unison.ie/irish_independent/frontpagepdfs/2006/14998.pdf.

However, one would usually find two (2) two-column ads opposite each other below the fold (in the smaller, county-wide papers), giving only three columns in the center to work with for editorial. Both The Corkman and The Kerryman are printed at Tralee in Co. Kerry.

My job interview with the editor of The Kerryman asked me, "What would I do to fix the layout below the fold?" the question still haunts me, because I didn't get the sub-editor job.

(I have no idea why I have a sudden urge to eat oranges today, though.)
