I'm looking for a critique on my A1 pages, specifically the first two, however, feel free to berrate anything else.

This is my first month as a designer and I'm trying new things with A1 instead of the same old boring crap that we all see every day. As a weekly paper, I have the luxury of doing that each week, because if we were a daily it would become difficult to make something special each day, plus it would no longer be special (kind of like the "special" effects in Star Wars III).

I like the horizontal design of the drug page because that picture makes it work. But my news editor was complaining that he wanted a rail along side of the picture instead. My argument is that that mucks up the cleanliness of the page and distracts from the picture.

Thanks,

Hey Mike,

Very nice work for a beginner -- wish some of the experienced folks I know had this kind of portfolio.

I like the two fronts. The drug package works well, but it's not clear to me whether the picture is a setup or if it's a real cokehead doing real snorting. If it's the latter, I think I'd have tried something to make it look a little less straight news-ish.

I like the graphic on the college package. I'm intrigued by the odd shapes on the pix. I would like to see a little more white space (or a rail or drop in info graphic as in the drug package) in the text area -- it's a little gray and dense down there.

I also like that you stuck with standard fonts for these packages. I wasn't wild about the art-font choices on the middle-row pages. The bottom-row pages are very cool!
