A friend of mine is going to be teaching a beginning newspaper design course this fall and has asked me if I know some good teaching tools and books that might help his lesson plan. Can you help? Aside from visiting this site, which I already recommended, can you post some books you might have on your desk?

Thanks so much.

Tim Harrower - "The Newspaper Designer's Handbook"
Robin Williams - "The Mac is not a Typewriter"
Kimberley Elam - "Grid Systems" (which reminds me, I loaned this out to someone, dang it)
I also recommend checking out books on logo design and books on advertising design -- I think if you're a newspaper designer, many of those theories apply.

The books listed above are good core materials.

As a supplementary material, don't underestimate the handout packets on newspagedesigner.com.

Many of them come straight from college- or professional-level lectures.

And they're free.

Best book I've picked up in quite a while is Elements of Typographic Style, by Robert Bringhurst. Get your hands on a copy of it if you want to unlock the true power of typography and have a full understanding of why type is important.

"design anarchy" by kalle lasn

https://secure.adbusters.org/orders/designanarchy/
50% off for art/design students and teachers!

more importantly, it reminded me to look this up again:

first things first 2000 - a design manifesto

http://www.xs4all.nl/~maxb/ftf2000.htm

Quote:
There are pursuits more worthy of our problem-solving skills. Unprecedented environmental, social and cultural crises demand our attention. Many cultural interventions, social marketing campaigns, books, magazines, exhibitions, educational tools, television programs, films, charitable causes and other information design projects urgently require our expertise and help.

We propose a reversal of priorities in favor of more useful, lasting and democratic forms of communication - a mindshift away from product marketing and toward the exploration and production of a new kind of meaning. The scope of debate is shrinking; it must expand. Consumerism is running uncontested; it must be challenged by other perspectives expressed, in part, through the visual languages and resources of design.

they forgot to add newspapers.

Been around a while, but one of my faves:
Editing by Design: For Designers, Art Directors, and Editors-The Classic Guide to Winning Readers by Jan V. White.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1581153023/sr=8-1/qid=1155231074/ref=pd_bbs_1/104-7314035-6364741?ie=UTF8

Also, The Non-Designer's Design Book by Robin Williams is also pretty nice for the fundamentals.

I'm majoring in general graphic communication and the only thing that got me interested in newspaper design was flipping through one of the SNDs "Best of Newspaper Design" books. They come out every year. The first one I saw was vol. 25 and even though I was a broke college student I ended up buying vol. 27.

I had no idea so much cool stuff was possible in the world of newspaper design and it "showed me the light" so to speak. It's a great source of all sorts of examples to go along with lessons. I wouldn't make it a required text for students to buy though.
