Hey all, I've been trolling this place for a few weeks now. Fantastic stuff. Now, on to the reason I'm here.

Browsing Newseum this morning past the pdf of the Merc, my newspaper favorita, I saw this:
(edit: link removed)
And my jaw metaphorically dropped. The dead giveaway was the triple-exclamation mark. I'm also assuming it was a joke and was removed before the final print, but, oh man, how did the electronic version not get fixed?

Since I'm a newbie in this business, a similar thing happened at my college newspaper when I was there. I had been joking around with the lead, saying "a buttload of new MU crap is coming this way," but we were able to get it fixed just before sending it off to the printers. Egad.

I was wondering what some of your big-time, 120-point banner headline, all-caps errors have been. Great for cocktail conversations!

Can I say anything else without drawing the ire of the Merc?

I really, really respect them.

My favorite gaffe happened to someone else when I was interning at the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. The 1-column mug style at the time was to have their name and a bit of description afterward. In someone's save-get function they had "Jimmy Johnson: Is a big jerk."

Yup. It found its way into print. A very stern memo was sent to all to remove any offending material out of coding. I always have a misspelling in my dummy type to ensure that if it gets past me, anyone doing a spellcheck would catch it. That's assuming they're DOING a spellcheck, obviously.

Afew years ago (can't remember the paper) had a reverse bar promo that read:

"INSIDE: Not a damn thing is inside"

And, this isn't an error per se -- a headline for bring your daughter to work day:

"Day gives daughters 1st-hand job experience"

I think that one I will always be embarrassed about... at the last newspaper I worked for, we would always place the online bug on the front page, or at the top of a column as another entry point, and I typed in www.whitehouse.com instead of www.whitehouse.gov Embarassed
