I'm on the search for some tools to help me study news design and online news media. I'm working on a semester long 7,000 word research paper while I'm abroad in London. My requirements are that it pertains to my major and is related to Britain. I am outlining my plan of attack and have begun by dividing the papers by their owners.

I am planning to look at use of color, typography, design psychology, hierarchy, word/story counts, communication between print and online editions, how the design and content reflect one another. Another level will analyze the design and significance of tabloids, broadsheets, and the berliner. Then also morning vs. evening papers.

My adviser suggested I seek traditional design psychology books for academic references . Then I should apply what I've learned to the design of the papers. We agreed that online resources may have more detailed information I need considering new publications/redesigns. I am hoping to communicate with journalism professors at my University here, but ideally a/some designers at the newspapers here.

I am planning to research The 'London' Times, The London Paper, The Guardian, The Evening Standard, The London Lite, The Telegraph and The Independent.

So, if anyone had some text, digital, audio, video, anything resources, contacts, advice, suggestions, criticisms I am open and seeking guidance (and very skype-able). Are there important elements that I've missed here that I should be looking for? Does anyone know of similar studies that have been done before? I found a good resource for circulation numbers, but I am still looking to find how many hits each paper's website gets a day.

Thanks!

I dunno if or how you could incorporate this, but one thing that doesn't get much consideration is the effect of design on readers' retention of info. To wit: Does it make any difference to how accurately readers understand a story if it's a conventional headline-body copy approach or a 'nontraditional' layered approach.

I mean, it would be nice to know whether we design types are right about how news should be presented, or whether we just have our heads up our butts.

If I were doing the grad school thing, that's something I might propose to build a thesis around.
