Drop in Ad Revenue Raises Tough Question for Newspapers http://www.nytimes.com/2007/03/26/business/media/26paper.html?ex=1177732800&en=6b5fc110faef8659&ei=5070

70 newsroom jobs to be deleted at L.A. Times http://www.visualeditors.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=39795#39795

Now, I'm not saying section front (or front page) ads are the solution to all of our problems. But every bit of revenue helps these days.

As much as I dislike them, I'll take an A1 strip ad and a job any day of the week.

Just grabbed this from Newseum 2010. It's up for a SND.

If Bob Uecker were responding to this, I think he'd say "Juuusst a bit melodramatic."

Rolling Eyes

the ad probably just paid someone's salary. so i'm ok with it. it's an unfortunate reality most of us have to deal with.

another jab at snd. nice.

Well here's my takes:

* The ad revenue on these won't ultimately be a difference maker in what's going on at newspapers around the country.

* But because of what's going around in newspapers around the country, editorial execs have little strength to hold the proverbial line on this.

We won't be able to stop this, though. So swallow hard, preferably with a bourbon chaser.

This is incredibly over the top.

Ads are a necessary evil and I think ads can look smart on the front page of a newspaper.

I'd love to see some info on just how much more money papers are making with front page and section front ads.
If we are getting a really strong premium for them, then I agree with Dean – whether they are going to solve any big picture revenue problems or not (my vote is not), there's just about no way to keep them at bay in this environment.
But if advertisers are paying close to the same or just a small amount more for a display ad on the front page as they might elsewhere, then I say this is closer to panic.

I wonder how people would feel with a McDonalds ad on the front of Time Magazine.

Of course this is over the top. My point was where does it stop. When do you say the ad takes away from the news? How far do you go to make a buck?
