I have only one thing to say about that.

Comparing ads on A1 to prostitution is a little harsh. You call it pimping. Some call it "My Company Demands a 30 Percent Profit Margin."

In the end, I saw "Pretty Woman," and I think it's possible to be a slut and still keep your dignity. Or most of your dignity. But you have to charge an awful lot.

Either way, you absolutely CANNOT let Jason Alexander slap you around. Damn that Philip Stuckey ...

Billy, if you already sold out for a Hot L, why would ads on your front page be that far behind? The Bakersfield McDonaldian

And I only have one thing to say about that:

Yeah, I know, I know. I'm not helping this thread.

Perhaps this isn't the best time to mention the Trib's new front page format, then.

PDF here.

Although it's not the ad that bothers me, but rather the sponsored jumps ("Please see Albertson's, Page A8") and weather ("Partly cloudy skies with a chance for great savings at Foot Locker."). And I'm being replaced by the Paginat-O-Tron 3000. Yeah, maybe that's what bugs me most.

Paginat-O-Tron 3000 signing off. Blurp. Beep. White Space. Blop.

As a result of this thread, I have:

1) Just eaten that salad at McDonald's (my 4-year-old daughter loves to look at the Elvis photos on the wall; who says visuals don't sell?) and I can report that it was actually pretty good. I went with grilled chicken.

2) Checked at work on the possibility of us being pimps. I've heard its hard out there being pimps and all, but I'm game.

Y'know, I recently learned that McDonald's food is actually HEALTHIER for you than sandwiches at our local Panera's. (For y'all non-midwesterners, that's a fast-casual sandwich chain.) One of the Panera's sandwiches clocks in at 1,100 calories. Plus they're damn expensive.

Don't make too much fun of the illustration. The kids try, they really do.

Oh, and ads on the front: Annoying, yes. And advertisers should pay a premium for them. And it'd be nice if they were modular. But if it staves off layoffs, then so be it.

Geez Colin - that's a lot of space left over for news ... seems like you could get a couple more ads on there ... maybe one above the fold ...

Also not helping this thread, bad moderator.

I've pushed for paid product placement in stories, such as:

"I don't know anything about the massive embezzlement and fraud that has occurred to the city accounts," City Treasurer James Smith said, pausing to take a drink from a crisp, delicious Diet Pepsi with rivulets of water running down the side. "Ahh, that's refreshing!" he added.

It could work.

Ads on the front pages aren't nearly as annoying to me as those superimposed ads that TV puts on football fields during a game. Only the viewer sees them. It chaps my craw watching Auburn whip Alabama and see a 20-yard ad for Johnson's Coat Barn.

So as long as they're done right, I've got no problem with 1A ads. I fear the big, bulky, obtrusive ads like the one that prompted this thread.
