Geez Colin - that's a lot of space left over for news ... seems like you could get a couple more ads on there ... maybe one above the fold ...

What?!? Mixing advertising and editorial in the same well is a line we simply will not cross. Besides, the Post-it ads have to cover something that's not an ad (and the machines aren't accurate enough to hit the nameplate every time).

(Insert appropriate emoticon here).

Ads on the front pages aren't nearly as annoying to me as those superimposed ads that TV puts on football fields during a game. Only the viewer sees them. It chaps my craw watching Auburn whip Alabama and see a 20-yard ad for Johnson's Coat Barn.

So as long as they're done right, I've got no problem with 1A ads. I fear the big, bulky, obtrusive ads like the one that prompted this thread.

Hey. Those folks over at Johnson's Coat Barn are just trying to make a living...while keeping Alabama warm.

I really think the Tribune page needs more umph. You really want someone to stop at the racks and say "Wow!" A few simple changes and I think this page could be a real eye-catcher.

Check it:

Fantastic! Clearly the Paginat-O-Tron 3000 is not up to the task of saving newspapers from, uh, ADHD and, you know, stuff. But the future for newspapers looks bright -- and full of bargains.

Priceless. Blurp. Beep. Hot Tilde. Zorp.

Colin, I'm laughing so hard, tears are rolling down my cheeks.

L-shaped A1 ads, ah, we've come full circle at last.

Finally, the "Profitable L" hits newsstands everywhere. And while I would never bite the ad that pays my check, I'd be remiss if I failed to mention that the "Profitable L" is one of the signs of the End Times. Well, that and Ziggy, the water skiing squirrel. Just FYI.

Profitably yours, Paginat-O-Tron 4000 Beta. Blurm. Beep. Bastard Measure. Borp.

Dear Colin,

Since you were replaced by the Paginat-O-Tron 3000 last week, I figured I'd let you know how things have been going in your absence.

In short, my first week dealing with the Paginat-O-Tron 3000 has been a pleasure. It has been programmed it to be your equal or better in nearly every way. Padgy 3K is fast, nimble and able to have surprisingly articulate conversations about Battlestar Galactica (go figure). When it runs low on ideas, I can pull out it's bulky idea cartridge and sort of do this "shake it with both hands dance" for a minute, and it's usually good for a few more.

Granted, the temper issue is seriously going to be a thing when it comes time for its annual performance eval. Whereas you would just move on to the next mockup when something got shot down, Padgy3K singed a couple people last week when its reversed-nameplate-photo combo was rejected. (Who knew the wax roller add-on also doubled as an argon laser?) It's OK; they were cops reporters, and I hear their eyebrows are growing back nicely.

The solid plutonium core powering the Paginat-O-Tron has caused most of my hair to fall out, but, on the plus side, it has yet to complain about doing a jump page.

So, all is well,
Josh

PS: The Paginat-O-Tron 3000 does not take kindly to negative assaults on its character. Should this message make it out of the building, send help.

Dude, DO NOT MESS WITH THE SQUIRREL. He's from Deltona and could easily reach my house via water-ski. And his name's Twiggy. Don't tick him off.
