Editor & Publisher's Joe Strupp reports today:

Quote:
Los Angeles Times Sportswriter Mike Penner revealed today that he plans to undergo a sex change operation, returning in several weeks as a woman.

In return, the Chicago Tribune-owned LA Times agrees to pay Penner less for doing the same job.

Have to love this quote from his editor:
---
He also revealed that when he told his supervisor, Randy Harvey, the editor said "Well, no one can ever say we don't have diversity on this staff."

65 cents to the dollar right?

watch for a memo coming from the tower: we're offering buy outs and encourage sex changes (men only).

Good Lord, Charles. I thought you were serious about the pay.

I'm fascinated by this. I think Penner/Daniels made the right decision in explaining to Times readers what was going on. I think I'd want to know that the new byline on the column was really the same person.

Thoughts, anyone else?

What do other columnists/reporters do that when they're changing their names (married/divorced, etc)?

Christine's column: http://www.latimes.com/sports/la-sp-oldmike26apr26,1,3394028.story?ctrack=2&cset=true

Since it's both names, it would need at least a sentence explaining it. Anything beyond that should be the person's choice. How many of us would want thousands of people to know about our lifelong struggles? It took a lot of courage to explain what she's been going through the last 40 years and she was really opening herself up to the community. Fortunately "Daniels said she had received only two negative responses out of 538 e-mails."

The L.A. Times has reported on her transformation:
http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-daniels27apr27,1,3595294.story?ctrack=1&cset=true

Props to the L.A. Times for using this as a chance to enlighten its readers with Christine's story.
Anyone who watches The Daily Show knows not every employer does the right thing in these situations.

Good point, Autumn. I don't think I've noticed anyone else explaining a name change. Which doesn't mean it hasn't happened. Most reporters I've known have left their bylines alone even if they change their names legally.

I admire Daniels quite a bit for putting her story out there. She certainly wasn't guaranteed a friendly reception.
