We had one more announcement here today from Jonathon Berlin ...
We'd like to make an exciting addendum to today's business staffing announcements: Emmet Smith of the Cleveland Plain Dealer will be our new business design director. Look for Emmet in business starting in early October in a role made famous by such names as Michael Tribble, Bonita Burton and Chuck Burke.
Emmet is one of the most-talented designers in the country and we're thrilled to have him join our team. He's currently working in the sports section in Cleveland, but he has done many other things. How good is he? This year, Emmet won 10 separate Society for News Design awards for his individual work. To give you some perspective, the San Francisco Chronicle won 15 total awards as an entire newspaper.
Emmet's pages on the phenomena of Lebron James, the rivalry between Ohio State and Michigan or the Cavaliers rising like a Phoenix were all newsy, evocative and creative. He also worked in features where he designed an election-night scorecard for readers to fill out as the votes came back for Kerry and Bush, complete with instructions for red and blue crayons. He came up with the idea and designed a full-page maze for readers to navigate and understand the aftermath of that same election.
Before joining the Plain Dealer, Emmet worked or interned at the Detroit Free Press, the Indianapolis Star and the Virginian-Pilot. He graduated from Ball State University, where he was editor of the Ball State Daily News: That year, he was honored as SND's student designer of the year.
Jeff Hindenach, who's been serving as lead business designer, will move back to his first home on the news desk, where he'll work on the front page, continue with the ReadThis! teen page (which has become close to his heart) and improve our effort to incorporate more visuals online. In business, Jeff produced creative page after creative page and he'll be missed in that department, but we very much look forward to having Jeff back in news. Those who know Jeff know his heart is in the nightly news operation: He's produced some of our most important visual journalism since starting here as an intern in 2002, and we're confident he will help raise our game on 1A with his return.
Please congratulate Jeff and say hi to Emmet when he gets here.
