A small silver lining to the fallout from the layoffs at the Arizona Republic:
We're thrilled to pick up Adrian Alvarez here at the San Antonio Express-News. He'll join our visual team December 11.
Adrian is one of the top visual editors in our field, a product of Mexico's design-award-winning machine, El Norte, and one of the original visual team for Roger Black & Co.'s Rumbo project here in San Antonio (before that enterprise went south and Adrian headed west to Phoenix).
Adrian brings a boatload of skills to our operation, so we'll enjoy the "problem" of figuring out how to best leverage them. In the immediate term, Adrian will join in on the devlopment of some new niche products.
We're glad to have been able to make one family's Thanksgiving a little bit happier.
Enhorabuena!
Adrian is an amazing visual journalist and the nicest guy.
I have been greatly inspired by his work and his talks.
My hearty congratulations both to Adrian and the San Antonio Express-News
Way to go, Dean, nice hire! And congrats to Luis (or Adrian, if you prefer), I knew the search wouldn't take long at all. This is great news.
Mr. Alvarez was a joy to work with at the Republic, and I'm sure his expertise will lead to great things at the Express-News as well. For those not familiar with Luis and his work, here's some examples:
Thank you very much for all your messages.
My family is very, very happy to go back to El Alamo!
And thanks to Dean for this opportunity.
