... it moved to page 2. And, yes, the ligatures are deliberate.

OK, now that I've wiped the celebratory cake icing off my face (woo-hoo, one in a row!) I can join the conversation about our redesign.

Kathy Bogan is posting some facts behind the redesign, so look for her posting, too.

Basically, we're trying to make the best use of our tab format and use a magazine approach to the paper. We make big use of facing page spreads (true DT or false DTs) as much as possible. Our section fronts now try to be more magazine-like with a large visual presence and either no stories (sports, features) or 1-2 stories (Biz). Alas, due to the terms of the JOA and some other issues the Saturday Rocky is still a broadsheet. But we will try to make that feel more like the tab in terms of booking, typography and our approach. Stay tuned for that.

One word about our 1A today. We kicked off a 33-day (gulp) series today (Hey, why not launch a huge project at the same time you launch a redesign, that's not a problem, right?) so today's 1A focused on that, which was very magazine-y and not hard news. It won't necessarily look like that every day. We have a full range of devices we can use for 1A from all text to all photo and a variety of display type options in between.

The new design is still a work in progress, so our presentation should improve as we get everyone in the room in tune.

And as for the comment about one of our early possible flags looking like a beer label -- you're right. So right, that our editor John Temple actually wants to get a microbrewery to brew us up some Rocky Red. All that and a reader writing a song about the new paper. what more could you want from a redesign?

NewsDesigner.com has posted some before and after pages, without me even lifting a finger (you guys are very quick). So you can see some sample pages there. I can post some more after we get going a bit.

I hope my wife still remembers me after 3 months of living at the paper.

happy to answer questions if anyone has any.

Hmmm. That was me. I guess that label was so well-designed it made me thirsty.

Tell John that I can only brew and ferment 10 gallons at a time but I would be willing to brew a small, custom batch to match that most excellent label!

Mmmm. Beer.

Great job. Everyone at the Rocky should take a bow. There aren't many places that can launch 2 complete redesigns in 4 years. And Kathy writes an interesting tidbit: The realigning of planning. Can you give us some insight on that?

Congratulations guys. Raise a Rocky Red at the bar tonight (or was that last night?)

FYI: Everyone can check out the new look through the Rocky's electronic version, which they were nice enough to let people use for free through Friday. Scroll down to the middle of the Web site to the "We've changed in print box," then click the "See entire print edition." If you don't mind entering an e-mail address, you can browse the entire paper.

From the brew kettle to beer mug is about 23 days if I keg it. Add another week or two if you want it in bottles.

Cool

I'm really liking the early looks at this redesign, especially the simplifying of A1.

And thanks to Kathy and Randall especially for dropping in and offering insight. Well done.

The Rocky beer sounds pretty sweet, too. Very Happy

RMN just discovered how to save the newspaper industry: Beer.

Brilliant!

And from what I've seen on newsdesigner, the redesign's not shabby either.

At first, I didn't like the red bar but once I saw it carried through to the sections it makes sense to me. I dig it.
