Stunning news out of San Jose last week...

Stephanie Grace Lim in
an undated file photo

Design Director Jonathon Berlin writes:

Quote:
We are sad to announce that Stephanie Grace Lim is leaving the Mercury News. Steph will lead a team of graphic designers at Ebay's PayPal division -- yep, that's right down the street, so lunch will still be an option. No word on whether Mercury News friends will be able to get a PayPal discount or free T-shirts.

Stephanie has had a momentous impact on the Mercury News over the past seven years. Her energetic eye and LifeStyle covers are a favorite inside and outside the building. Who can resist those googley-eyed squirrels, birds, penguins, robots and Sumo wrestlers? During her time at the paper she's had remarkable work in every section of the paper including a gravestone for the tech boom, a series of artsy squirrels, three years of last-minute wrapping paper and much, much more. She's been awarded for her work from SND, SPD, Print and more.

Steph is a creative force not just here but throughout the journalism community. She had 11 speaking engagements last year including talks in Stockholm and Denmark, Orlando, Miami and Spokane, Wash. She's a beloved speaker in the newspaper design world and this year has branched out to talk to folks in the tech industry, including Adobe and the Community of Digital Artists.

But more than her accomplishments, we will miss Steph for her energy and the general happiness and fun she brings to the newsroom. As features design director she set up a creativity lounge for her group and her "cubicle design" has to be the best in the building if not the world.

We will very much miss Stephanie, but we are excited for her new opportunities. Please wish her the best. Her last day will be in late February. Stay tuned for details on goodbye festivities.

We will fill the position and are looking for someone to lead our features and illustration ranks. Please see me or Matt if you are interested or know anyone who would be a good candidate.

- Jonathon

I'm damn near speechless. Stephanie is a true force of nature. The newspaper world just got a little bit bleaker.

If you don't have her personal Web site bookmarked, do it now:

Best wishes, Steph!

I told Steph this over the many weeks we were discussing whether she should take the leap out of newspapers, but I may as well say it publicly:

Quote:
I wish you would not go and we will do anything we can to try to make you stay, but if you do decide on a new career there is no such thing as "replacing" you ... After all, those are some mighty big flip-flops to fill!

We at the Merc are so incredibly sad the mega-talent that is Stephanie Grace Lim is leaving, and not just us but daily journalism. We really cannot ever replace Steph because she's one of a kind.

It has been my pleasure to watch Steph in action. She's an immensely talented mini-mogul genius with an unmatched appetite for ice cream and being absolutely totally herself. She's also a real force in this industry, plus just about one of the nicest people you can ever call a colleague ... And, on the really really bad days, she can always make you smile.

Thank goodness she'll still be in San Jose!

i found out today and still in omfg-wtf mode.

i greeted her with a big hug with a "congrats and wtf??!?"

there's no one else like her. ever. she's like a sister to me and i never had an art director with such conceptual and technical prowess. always smiling with a hearty laugh that can be heard through the features and business depts and concrete walls. i just don't let anybody wrap me up in caution tape.

at least she'll be working down the street and can still go go-kart racing on weekends.

plus that paypal site needs some serious help. freakin' ebay...

Wow.

My hat’s off to Steph for so eagerly spreading the gospel of creativity.

We were blessed by her energetic presence not only at SND, but in our own offices in Spokane. She taught us how to have fun, how to look in the smallest places for the biggest ideas, and – of course -- how to avoid the dreaded “moat of suckiness.”

Congrats, Steph. You’ll by missed by many.

This is just about the crappiest piece of news I've heard in awhile. In these challenging times in our industry, we need more talented people like Ms. Lim, not fewer. Wish you the best, Stephanie, but damn, wish you were staying.

my job title will be "Creative Principal Designer" (that means i have to be creative because it's written in my title!)

i'm torn, because i'm incredibly sad to leave such great people and a creative playland, (and i really truly do love newspapers) but also very excited to start a new adventure. my pigtails are confused right now- one is pointing up and one is pointing down! :0)

if you post anything, can you tell the peeps to keep in touch? my new email address is [stephaniegracelim "at" gmail.com] and the website is www.stephaniegracelim.com

There ya go, Steph!
