I saw this the other day and my jaw dropped. It's a demo video of a new image-processing algorithm that allows for content-aware photo resizing. I sincerely hope this hasn't been posted already.

I suppose you can make the argument that we already can't trust images we see in print/online, but after this...

Wow! That's pretty awesome. And as for this opening the door even more for image manipulation, my take is that as long as there have been photographs, there have been ways to manipulate what is captured by the camera. Ultimately, preserving what the camera captures depends on people and their ethics, not on what tools they have or don't have at their disposal. Besides, not everybody's objective is the same as journalists'. Some want to manipulate the image, not necessarily for malevolent purposes.

Yeah, I worry less for the malevolence factor and more for things like "Man, I was planning on an extreme horizontal, but all they gave me was a square shot... oh well, I can make it work now!"

That being said, yeah, this is a pretty awesome application.

Crikey!

One mad thought: I wonder if it could be scaled up to work with video?
Letterbox or 4:3 - Who cares? let the screen decide.
